I retired Silk and re-homed her to a WONDERFUL home where she could be a princess the rest of her life. That was in November. i grieved myself to death, cried for hours on end, called about her till I got on the lady's nerves. Finally after two days, my husband caught me gone and called the new owwner, told her the shape I was in and asked if she would give her back. She did but was very upset. gradually, I began to get used to the idea that I have too many dogs and Silk was the most logical one to go. She hadn't adjusted well when I got her at age five so I hated to put her thru that. But, At Christmas, I called the lady, tied a big red Christmas boww on Silk and handed her over Christmas Eve.(for free) The lady came to get her and Silk just wagged her whole little rump. She had already bonded with the new owner. She goes every step she does, sleeps with her, travels with her and is the reigning Princess in the home. i couldn't have found a better home for her. So yes, it is very hard to rehomee your dogs and there are usually regrets. Just not to the extent mine was. I have been fine this time.
