A pedigree is a genealogical study, not necesarily the genetic blueprint.
People like to run lengthy five generation pedigrees. 3 Generation pedigrees is all that's needed. Most breeders know what is behind the dogs and the lines involved. For example if each parent contributes 50% of the gene pool and each grandparent's contributtion is 25%, the great-grandparents share only 12%. Dogs listed on the pedigree prior to that time cannont make any really significant contribution. The only exception to this is when you have a dog appear multiple times in the same pedigree.
