Hey, I think that as long as animals don't have a BAD (aggressive, fighting) reaction to each other, you're doing GREAT!

I say, go ahead and adopt him if he is tugging at your heart. I bet your first dog will enjoy his company, and it could bring some interest and energy to his last years.
