It very well could be the food. Sometimes it takes a while for the allergen to build up and cause a reaction. You could try one of the hypoallergenic foods. Read the labels to be sure corn and wheat are not in it as that is the common food allergen in dogs.
Duck and potato or fish and potato may be valid alternatives.
