Sionce you were the one that changed your mind, it would not be ethical to keep part of the deposit.

To be honest, I believe they would have a case if they refused to accept the returned deposit and insisted on the puppy. So you will be lucky if they take back the deposit and walk away happy.

They might be realizing that this was not a good idea but are afraid to tell you they changed their minds for fear you will keep the deposit.
