I have used it on Charlie since he was 11 weeks old and we've never seen a flea! It is the kind you put between their shoulders. Advantage makes their varieties by age and weight so it'll be safe for your dog.
Flea dips... i don't know... maybe just take it to the groomer and get a flea bath and then apply the treatment. You shouldn't have any problems after that.
