I can't tell you 100% when a stud can physically perform and when they should perform-- I heard many different answers to each question and have found that most of it is more a preferance or opinion that differs from breeder to breeder. Likewise, a stud's 'readiness' if you will, differs from dog to dog. You also have to make sure you give the male time to fully mature before you can even tell if he should be used as a stud--his 'ability' I'm sure will develop long before that.

Personally, I waited until our stud was a little more than 1 1/2 years to use him. I've heard 2 years, I've heard 1 year. Again, an answer I'm sure you will find is based on opinion and preferance. For both of our female, we bred on the 8th, 9th, and 11th day of her heat, with one tie each day--both time she produced 4 healthy pups, all very close to the same size.

Good luck!
