I am going to jump in here with my 2 "teeny" yorkies.
When I first wanted a yorkie I found a great breeder, her average size was 6-7lbs, the mom was 7 lbs and dad 6 lbs, smallest puppy ever was 5.5lbs.
Then came Reggie, normal size but only grew to 4lbs, on the dot. Reggie has had several falls, all from jumping off of things like the bed, and couch. We have placed staris for him so he stops that.
Well, then we decided to get him a little sister. Our breeder was amazed at how tiny Reg was. We got a sister of his (1 year apart). Kenzie stopped growing at 13 weeks and never grew agian till 17 weeks. She now weighs in at 2.4lbs. My breeder fixed her dogs b/c that size is too small.
BUT...Kenzie WAS one of those healthy as a horse, tough as nials, little dogs.
Now at age three she went for her yearly, to discover that she has brittle bones, they found a break in one knee, one forearm, and a crack in a vertrabrae. She had a major seizure at Xmas, and we nearly lost her.
After 3 years of perfect health she is going down hill and it is heart breaking.
When people go, "Awww! Look how little she is" I tell them how I know my vet's technicians ona first name basis, how much we pay out in vet meds, visits. How uncertain her future is.
I am a huge advocate of larger yorkies, I have dealt with the rapid and terrfying episodes of hypoglycemia, some come on with no warning (I moniter their food to make sure they eat enough).
I can tell you that one bout is a $220 vet bill...(my vets love me...)
I LOVE my yorkies, no question, I want a whole household. But these cute little dogs come with a price, monetary that is ongoing and in your heart.
