There wasn't anything to defend - from what I read on this long thread it was only people wondering why things got to this point. I totally understand financial problems more than you know....
I swear if I had money I'd donate to every single cause I could...I really would - I don't have much but always have a hard time when I see a need and wish I could send money out too everyone who needs it - most of all sick dogs and people who can't pay vet bills

but you can't blame people for asking...it's normal to do this especially when their money is involved. Do you have 10 days left to take care of your house now or is this something they need now cause it's after 5 pm here in Houston
