I just retired, but Max was alone from 10 weeks old till 6 months of age. I was a teacher, so in the summer I was home very early since I taught summer school only in the morning, but when I went back in September, I decided to spend the money and send him to a really nice doggy day care 2 times a week. They usually make deals if you buy a package. I've also seen ads for private people to stop in and visit the dog for much less money. If this is above your limit, the truth is that they learn to sleep for most of the time you're gone anyway. This is his Mommy and his life. I'm sure you're a wonderful Mommy, so please think of that whenever the guilt gets you. Coming home with new toys often helps a lot too.
I still leave him in his crate when I go out, which happens to fit in the bathroom door, so he has his crate to sleep in and the bathroom to walk around in. I leave some toys, at least 2 chewy toys, food, water, a few treats, the radio, lights and the tv on so that he can hear noise. Now when I come home, he's always warm and cuddly inside his crate so I know he has been sleeping. I don't trust that he won't get hurt if he's loose - he's young.
I also think it would make him more anxious since he is still a baby.
He's the sweetest, nicest little boy. He's so good and has shown no behavior that shows that he's any the worse for wear having been left home.
Good luck with your job hunt - and don't let the guilt put any wrinkles on your face.
Happy Holidays!
