I had my own business installing tile and wood flooring for a while. The horror of seeing the underside of carpet is just awful. I don't think I'll ever have it again. The area rugs and/or teaching the pup to use the doggy steps is the most sensible. With a little encouragement, they take to the steps. The area rug is just a little insurance in case they change their minds, and if you buy a good one, it will offer enough padding to ease the landing. Just make sure you get one with the anti-slip backing as you could find yourself landing in an uncomfortable way!
