I think a bellyband is definitely the way to go too.

I use washclothes - (and have a stack of about three dozen of them). I fold one diagonally and wrap it around Murphy - and then pin it with a diaper pin.

I change these every time they are even the slightest bit damp (remember I have tons of them - never run out - and I just throw them in the washing machine when only a few are left...easy!)

Murphy has never gotten a rash. He is 14 months old - and doesn't pee very often anymore. I take his bellyband off and take him outside every two hours or so, and he is good about peeing outside.

Murphy's bellyband is almost never wet in the morning (he doesn't wet overnight).

The first year of Murphy's life - he was confined to the kitchen when I went to work. And - for months, he has never pee'd in that area when I'm gone. So, I have started putting a bellyband on him and let him run loose while I'm gone. And when I'm gone for 6 or 7 hours to work - it is always dry when I get home. (If he starts wetting it while I'm gone - I will put him back in the kitchen....because I don't want him wearing a wet bellyband for hours while I'm gone....but so far, he's doing great! ... and he's wearing it just in case.)

So - Actually Murphy is really potty trained quite well. Bellybands for him are for "just in case" in the house.

But some evenings - he will wet once or twice (perhaps I don't get him out often enough) -- but he doesn't damage the carpet or anything.

REMEMBER - you little dog does not have to be running around with a stinky wet bellyband on. Check it often and keep a dry one on him.

I know this will solve your problem. It is so simple..... And - you all be happier.

Good luck! Carol Jean

PS: I do agree with you. I think that if a dog were left running around with a wet bellyband on - it would get stinky - and they would get a rash.
But it's easy not to let this happen. (And don't forget - when they wet around the house - carpets, etc., this gets stinky too..... this is what I don't want to happen.)

I deliberately got a little boy dog - so that I could use a bellyband - Thank God, I did this. I don't know what I would do with a little girl who was hard to potty train.
