From a groomer's point of view -- there really isn't much else they can do. If a dog is badly matted -- it can take hours and hours to get them out - plus, this would be the worst day your dog ever had in it's life. It hurts!
And - to be honest - some matts just can't be removed.
********* So the lesson is to do some daily grooming at home. I really think that if you have a real problem with your dog matting (a lot) - I'd keep it in a puppy cut......it's much easier and this is one of my favorite cuts anyway!
In a way - you can count your blessing now - and if you keep her matt free at home - you won't have to go through this again.

As far as it being winter -- I don't see any problem here. My little guy has short hair - and I can't get him to come in. I only let him stay out for 10 or 15 minutes - and then I have to go out and drag him in...and, he never seems to be very cold. He's never shivering.....
