Human noises in general will frighten them away. So, if you do see one, wave your arms and yell at it, that will temporarily get it to leave. But don't leave your little dog outside without you nearby.
I can always tell when one is in our area. We feed songbirds, they are in our yard constantly. If I'm outside and the songbirds get quiet or fly away suddenly - I can just about bet when I look up - I'll see a hawk. They eat songbirds too!! | birds eating birds.
