Mine bark at strangers, when they are playing, when someone knocks on the door, when people are outside....why would I WANT to discourage that!?!? Actually, I trained my grandparents dog (used to be my dog) not bark by getting this training device that emits a high frequency noise. I sat for several hours outside and everytime he'd bark or jump up on someone, I'd set it off. Took about 2 days and that ended it. They make bark collars that have sound sensors on them as well if I am not mistaken?

Never tried another method...never needed to.
