My dogs love the rawhide chips (flat and about 2" square). I give them a new one every day or two and throw the older one away.
Neither of my dogs really eat these - but they do get a little soft and soggy -and, yes, they occasionally tear a small piece off, which they probably eat. But, this really doesn't amount to much.
So - I feel that I'm getting the benefit of their having something to chew on (which is very good for their teeth and gums) and at the same time - it really isn't something they are eating, so it won't cause a weight problem.
*** I've let all my dogs chew on these for the past 15 years - and have never had a problem. They really like them. I think that dogs have an innate need to chew on things. It gives them something to do (remember a dog's life can be very boring) and chewing is something they need to do to maintain healthy teeth and gums. My dogs will chew on these for hours.
So - no one's going to take our rawhide chips away from us. We love them.
