The side netting on a human playpen can be dangerous for puppies, they can get caught or even climb out and get hurt doing so.
Do x-pens have little rubber feet on the bottom rails? If so you could use a desk chair floor protector underneath...that would be easy to clean and it would protect your flooring. We used them under out bird cages a few years ago and they were great.
