I wouldn't allow any dog to feed soley on cat food. It's waaayyy too high in some areas of nutrition and not enough in others for a dog. As a treat, that's one thing, but not as a staple diet. Just for future reference. You'd be better off feeding him/her people food or adding such to a nutritionally sound dog kibble.
I'm glad you did what you felt you had to in the end though.
