Same here. When I got Abbie, I wanted to breed her "just once", to have a puppy by her. Then, I started learning, too! I must honestly say I don't understand how anyone can breed little 3lb under-sized dogs, knowing what she would go through. Abbie is 6lbs at 11months, and I can't imagine her giving birth! One of the major reasons for changing my mind about breeding, is I know me
. It would weigh heavily on me not knowing where my babies were, or how their lives were playing out. I had to give my horse away years ago, and the possibility that she may have (at some point) fallen into irresponsible hands still haunts me.
Abbie was spayed last Monday, (and, doing quite well, btw
) and I'm so very glad that's all behind us, now!
I, too, have great respect for RESPONSIBLE breeders; and, I don't think $1,000 / pup is too much at all! LOL
