We went to The Netherlands to see my folks. I was very concerned about getting the right paper work. But I did my due diligence and did everything by the book (although we had a last minute scare with a high up official who didn't know what the heck she was talking about...). Luckily The Netherlands doesn't have any strict requirements - all I had to get was a regular airline health form and an additional form for the Netherlands filled out by my vet (and definately no quarantine). And honestly, when we arrived in Amsterdam, no one even asked me for it. Customs just checked my passport and I walked on through.
Advice to make the flight more pleasant... Definately get you yorkie used to the carrier way in advance. Take your yorkie out for fun trips in it. And let it sleep in it. I put a comfy blanket in her carrier. And a potty pad!!! Don't give your yorkie too much water and food before you leave. But make sure you have food and water with you for on the flight. Oh and take a tube of Nutrical with you in case your yorkie doesn't want to eat. I ask the vet for sedatives and brought with me just in case, but never used them. I also put her favorite toy in the carrier.
BTW, I flew NWA/KLM and they allow up to 2 dogs in the cabin for flights...
First, please make sure you have all your facts straight about taking your dog with you. Make sure the airline you're flying allows dogs in the cabin, also for overseas flights. Make sure you contact the Italian embassy or consulate-general about the requirements for the country. Dealing with customs of another country can be a real pain and you sure don't want to overlook anything and get into problems!!!
