The click sounds like a pen click, and a click means the dog gets a treat. You tell the dog to sit, he sits <CLICK>, then he gets a treat. I do "clicker" training except I just use a word marker "Yes". The clicker tells the dog they did something right. And, in the case that the dog is afraid of the clicker you would use something else.
