My vet's theory is that the dog will rest therefore recover better in surroundings that reduce stress rather than increase it. Unfamiliar sounds, smells, people and animals will not help your dog rest. Your voice, his bed, and the familiarity of everything else at home will. Why any vet would keep a dog overnight after a spay/neuter, without complications, is beyond me. Decide which is more important to you, taking him home, or keeping this vet. If you feel as strongly as I feel, I think you should discuss with your vet that you are considering talking to another doc if he is set on this practice.
