I've had this happen, it sucks and I feel so bad for you. I know I wouldn't have the money for the fees and trying to come up with the money to cover the checks would be a nightmare. My only suggestion is if you ever accept a check again, go to the bank where it was written against and cash it there.
You can't put a stop payment on a check that was already cashed, my husband is in construction and learned this little trick, it has saved us from ever having to worry about someone elses check bouncing because you know immediately if they actually have the funds.
