YTCA rules to become a member, requires sponsorship of 2 existing members in good standing. These sponsors must have known you for a minimum of 2 years, with one having been to your home. At that point your name is published and if no one in the membership opposes your application, you will become a member. Usually takes about 6 months.
You do not have to be a breeder or exhibitor at the time you join or at anytime. However, there is a code of ethics and code of conduct that members are expected to adhere to.
Regional clubs are run pretty much the same way.
