My vet said to only use cotton balls wet with warm water or saline solution. Wipe the goo gently until it is soft, and I also use a plastic flea comb and very gently tug a little so I don't hurt them.

Vet also said to use human artificial tears a few times a week to clean out eyes and keep them moist.

It's become a part of the everyday brushing routine.
