My 2-year-old used to do that. My wife's glasses disappeared one day, and she had to order some new ones. Six months later, they showed up at the edge of the bed with little teeth marks in them.
I don't know why they do it, but it's fairly common among dogs. I googled it and found an entry where one person's dog dug a hole in their mattress to hide things!
