Young puppies seem to matt easily - My Cheri did until her coat changed - I actually had several matts when she was a baby I had to cut out - Once her adult coat came in she rarely matts but I also changed her shampoo.
I think a REALLY good shampoo and conditioner is important... and also a light spray on oil or leave in - There's several kinds I've used and she has NO MATTS ever anymore. She wears jammies everynight and clothes and the spray on has helped immensly.

AND...Johnsons No More Tangles for human babies will really help when your puppy is young to brush out any knots...a groomer I went to swears by it and I use it too.
