I only used a crate when Jack was really small, and then only to transport him to and from my work, and he used it as a bed there. I have been very lucky with him not tearing things up, I give him the run of our living area and my bedroom, his wizdog is in the laundry room. I tried getting a bed for him, but he only uses it during the day when he is too tired to jump into my husband's recliner. At night he sleeps with us.
I think it is the choice of the owner. I have always let my dogs have space, and have never had a problem with destruction.
