When I got Chewy he would hold it in forever!! Like 6 hours! And you never knew when he would go. I couldn't get him to understand he needed to go out side. I followed him around the house like a hawk! I never let him out of my sight!
He went in a pile of leaves and I took him back to that same spot a few times (every hour)
I think because the leaves held the smell he knew to go there... So I bought a baby play yard... (I think and ex pen is the same thing) It's octagon shaped and is plastic... there is no door so you have to place them in it... I put it right at the same spot of leaves where he was going so it would be the same spot...and I always stay with him to watch him go... I praise him... did the treat thing for a while but then we just decided to praise like crazy... because you can't give treats forever!
I put sones in the bottom because he was digging and he would get so dirty. I stuck a little of the leaves he had gone on in there to give him the idea of what I wanted and he went potty no problem!
I have a row of bricks around the edge of it and when he is done he gets up on the bricks and I wipe his butt and we are outta there! My friend does the same thing bricks around the edges and stone in the middle... Her yorkie gets up on the bricks when he is done Also! Weird huh?
He goes in does his thing and is all done within 3 minutes. He has not had a single accident in about a week now and he is starting to go to the back door when he has to go! I have a plastic bin lined with a garbage bag to clean up his poop and it stays very clean. I hung a tarp over the top to keep the rain off and my hubby will build a roof when he gets a chance...
