At Chewy's training class last night we learned drop it. I was told you have two toys that are the same... You throw one and when they get it you dangle the other one and say drop it. They want what ever you have so they drop the one and you give them the other... You can throw them and play fetch this way if your dog will do that. Any way they get the idea that you want them to drop the thing they have....
Chewy takes off when he has some thing (even a treat) the trainer said to reward with treats and hold him while he is eatting it to learn that he doesn't need to run. Also when you give some thing like a treat you bring your hand back so the dog needs to come into your space to get it. If you extend your arm to give something it encourages them to grab and run! hope this helps!
