Default Question about males

Ok - so I took Tucker to the vet yeterday & they can only find 1 testicle. They told me that if the other one does not come out on it's own that they will have to operate because leaving it inside the body can cause cancer. They told me to wait until he was a year old & if it hadn't dropped by then, then they can operate. We were planning on having him neutered at 6 months (he's almost 5 months now), but now it looks like we're going to have to wait. Are there any problems with waiting? I know with Biddy they wanted to do it before she went into heat, because this would reduce the risk of certain cancers. Is it the same with males? If I wait the full year am I putting Tucker at risk??? Thanks!
