To start say nothing except to focus on the piece of food you want him to notice and go for. Eventually work up to telling him to drop it but offer a piece of something real tasty at the same time. Work up to 'drop it' without offering a treat and give him a treat after the item is retrieved.

I'm sorry, but IMO this would only encourage more bad behavior. Food is a reward and should not be given as a bribe.

I'd start some obedience training, so he learns to come on command or to sit and stay so yhou can get to him. Leaving theleash on is a good suggestion.

The thing is to work with him in a controled environment. You can teach him to bring you things for a reward, but should not be bribed. He only gets the reward if he brings it to you and gives it up willingly.
