We live on a farm, and keep a few large mixed breed dogs to help out with the sheep, goats, etc. It is sometimes not practical to have them inside the house, although we consider them 'house dogs' for the most part. In the muddy weather, after they have been running through the fields, I keep them outside until I can deal with the mess and allow them back inside. I try to keep my 'kennel' very clean, and hose it down when necessary. And yes, there has been occasions when my Yorkie has stayed out there for short periods - don't freak out, she prances right in, and has all the comforts of home including toys, air conditioning, heat, etc.
I wanted something clean and comfortable. My Yorkie is small and doesn't do any damage, but the larger dogs occasionally chew if I put out blankets and soft bedding (although they don't when in the house). Rubber mats don't work if the dogs are wet because then they don't dry. Newspaper can get messy if the dogs get playing and toss it around. I really like the post with the Coolaroo bed idea, but think they may chew it, as well as the Make your own beds site..
Sorry for not saying that the dogs were not all Yorkies, but really wasn't expecting the response regardless.
