I have one of each. My maltese is more difficult, he barks more , is aggressive, grooming a maltese is a major commitment..much more so that grooming a yorkie. Maltese are know for being sweet natured but mine is not...he's a one person dog and is very attached to me but has little to do with others. I think you will find both ends of the spectrum with both breeds. I love Bentley to pieces but I will never get another maltese. The grooming issue alone is what I caution most people about. Those beautiful white faced dogs are very labor intensive..it take a lot of effort to keep them that way and you can not under any circumstance skip a daily brushing..the mats do not brush out like they do in a yorkie.
