iPods are compatible with a few different formats.... I usually put all my songs in AAC because I think the file size is smaller. (Smaller file size = more songs on my iPod).
AAC isn't compatible with all players though. Some can only handle a specific file type (AAC, MP3, AVI, WAV, whatever it is). If that's the case you'll have to be sure all files are converted the appropriate format... iTunes (as well as various other programs) can convert an AAC into an MP3 (and vice versa). You may lose a little bit of the sound quality in the process, but it's never enough that I notice it.
