For many women, they do get better with time, but that's a long time. I'm 8 years post menopausal and I only have an occasional hot flash. I still keep a fan on the floor by my desk so that when one occurs, I just turn on the fan for a few mins and that really helps. Also, I dress lightly - NO TURTLENECKS - even in winter, and I put a jacket on and off as needed. I find that when I have a flash and sweat, then afterward, I am cold sometimes, especially in a restaurant with max air conditioning. I also keep sugar free/low calorie popcicles in the freezer and when I feel a flash coming on, I'll eat a popcicle and it really helps.

Someone once told me that the best way to warm or cool the body is from the inside out - so if you are cold, drink something hot, if you are hot, eat/drink something cold. It works for me.
