I am not an experienced breeder, but had my 1st litter in June, and I did find and read that the more she nurses, the more her instincts would kick in. My Mommy didn't want to stay with her babies at the beginning either, but I held her down and put the puppies on her to nurse, and she did lie there. Then the more she nursed, the more she wanted to. My Vet also told me to take her bed out of the area and keep her in an enclosed area with the pups so that she would be more encouraged to rest with them and keep them warm, and that is just what she did. After 24 hours, we had to force her to leave them to go outside and then she would run right back to them.
I also know the pups will cry if they are cold. I know you said you have a warming lamp, just make sure that it is not too warm or too cold. TRY to have her nurse them, but don't leave them alone, since you don't know how she will react. I did let the Mommy eat a Placenta, but not all of them, I was told it would help their instincts kick in, and we had a very successful litter!
Good luck and if there is anythign else I can do to help let me know! |
