I don't know about the laws in your state but here, if a vehicle is not driveable (or owner will not be driving it for some time), you can turn the tags in on the vehicle and in doing so, do not have to carry insurance on it. If your future could mean you'd need a second car, why not check into the possibility of turning in the tags, putting it in the garage, and not carrying insurance on it. Your insurance agent should be able to answer that for you on if it can be done in your state. Or, as someone else suggested, just carry storage insurance on it. I would check with your agent and see what the cost would be to carry liability and comprehensive coverage on it only. Most companies won't let you carry coverage without liability. I would lower the liability as low as your state allows, go with a $500 or so deductible on your comprehensive (will protect the vehicle if, heaven forbid, your home should catch fire, it were to get vandalized, etc.). That should lower your insurance cost on it a good bit. Then, when you are ready to resume driving it, call your agent and have them increase the coverage on it. There are options out there for you other than selling it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
