I free feed my six. If I think one is acting quiet or wants more attention than usual, I pay particular attention to him/her. I usually keep the little packets of pedigree in the cabinet and will open one and make sure they are eating well.
Mine all want the same toy as well. One will grab a toy and walk into the group and growl to show he has it and no-one else can get it. Then the fight is on. They are so entertaining, we can just watch them play all day!
