I use a steam cleaner with nature's miracle.
You could always do what I need years ago after my skin baby irish triplets made a disaster of my livingroom carpet - I cut a HUGE (as in 4 feet across) hole in the middle of the carpet one day when my hubby went to work. He too had told me I couldn't put hardwood down..... Well, he came home - helped me lift the carpet and then kindly watched the 4 kids as I spent the next couple of weekends preparing the surface and laying the new hardwood floor myself!
