WEll after havingabout everydog under the sun here in the rescue AND small boys.....Here would be my choices for dogs that did great with the boys and were STURDY

Miniature Schnauzer
Shih Tzu
and big but quite love bugs... Irish Setter

I found that these 3 breeds were playful but not overpowering with the younger children and could also take a good playful romp with them without me worrying about either my kids or the dogs
