Default They get used to, but you need to be consistent

When I got my puppy, I decided I'll try the crate training also. I put the crate next to bed and the puppy ended waking up every hour or so for the first few nights..But I also realized he doesn't mind pooping in it. So the crate idea went out the window. I set up the xpen in the kitchen but keep the bedroom door open. Did he like it? no.... I started putting him there for a while during the day first to get him used to it. JJ was whining at the beginnig. But now he got used to it, it's just the matter of sticking to it and believe me, baby talking to him while he's whining doesn't help... . But now, for 3 nights hes slept through, just waking up to go on the pee pad and eat. Coz he also got the hang of the pee pad thing Yuppi!. He does seem like an easy, content puppy though Good Luck.
