I vote for s Shih Tzu... They have long hair but do not shed and if desired you can clip them into short styles. I got my first shih tzu when I realized our big sheepdogs were too big to play with my kids. I wanted something sturdy but small and not notorious for barking, shedding or biting. My shih tzu were so quiet and a kid coukd pick one up and swing it over their heads( it didnt happen of course) and they would just let them. They are non shedding and are very snuggly
They have plenty of energy and usually are approx 10 lbs .They arent too dainty for a little kid that knows how to treat a dog.
