Well, as lazy as I am, I'd be tempted to just go ahead and make the crate his official potty area! Maybe line it with pee pads or newspaper for ease of cleaning...
However, I assume you're wanting/needing him to sleep in the crate and therefore, he needs to keep it clean. I'd go back to the beginning of potty training. Take him to the place where you want him to potty (pee pads? outside?) repeatedly through the day. If he does potty there, throw a party - heavy on the little-girl-voice praise with treats! Keep an eagle eye on him and hurry him to the appropriate spot when you see him start to use the crate for his potty spot. Maybe close the door to the crate during the day so that he can't use it as a potty.
Are you trying to get him to use pee pads or to go outside?
