Erin - that is so scary! I have never seen any kind of bird of prey here. The most exciting birds I see are cardinals and blue jays...
Anyway, Stewie does the same thing -- he runs away when I call him to come.
I think if you have this sense of urgency in your voice, they can tell the difference. The other day Stewie ran out of my front door and was going toward the street. I screamed his name in a voice I didn't even know I had. He skidded to a stop, turned around and came back toward me.
I'm so happy that Gus is safe. It does suck to have them on leashes in the backyard, but better safe than sorry.
