He may not be getting the nutrition he needs from the purina puppy chow, I'm sorry but I feel that commercial brand food is nothing but junk, it has to many fillers in it. You should put him on something that is more healthy for him like Nutro Ultra, Royal Canin for Yorkies, Wellness, there are many brands that you could choose from that would give him the nutirtion he needs, plus you will find he will eat less and poop less.
You could also try to give him a scram egg in the am, that will give him some extra protein to jump start his day, or even some plain non fat yogurt.
