I was having that problem with Oscar too - he squats sometimes, hikes sometimes (never hikes when he's outside though which is weird). I did some rearranging in my apartment and in doing so, moved his pee pad away from anything that he could "lean to" and he hasn't missed since. I've also pulled the pad up so that it curves up the wall of his ex-pen a few inches.
