With my dog,(my Lab) he is 4 years old and I still put him in his crate when I leave the house to go anywhere. It has been like that from day one, so he is used to it. All I have to say is "crate" and he goes right in. If I'm gone for more than a few hours, which is rare, I usually take him with me.
I do this because he is always up on my couches and is big enough to cruise the countertops, and get into mischief.
