Yet another reason why puppy stores are problematic is because they do not screen the buyers. They sell the puppy to whomever pays the money. Has any pet store ever turned down a customer? As a result, people who buy puppies on a whim end up turning those dogs into the animal shelter a year or two later, after which point the animal gets traumatized and possibly euthanized.
I am not suggesting that everyone that buys from a pet store is an irresponsible pet owner, or that the breeders in contrast are good judges of character (I have seen very irresponsible breeders), but with a pet store it is solely and strictly business, and how can it be otherwise? It is a store. You pay the money, you get your commodity. They don't care if the purchaser kills the animal the second he walks out of that store. Hell, he would be coming back to pay them more money for another one.
