I have a parti-color yorkie and she is only two colors, white and gold. Biewer are a "special" offshoot of the traditoinal yorkshire terrier and are tri-colored. You can read the history of the yorkshire terrier to doscover that the breed was originally formed by the cross breeding of lots of different terriers. (This is why I find it ironic when some people complain about breeders who breed different breeds and get "mixes". This is exactly how yorkies were made.) Yorkies have maltese in them as well to acheive the small size since most terriers were bigger in the 1800s when this breed was being formulated. It happended in the town of Yorkshire, England and they were developed as "working dogs" to kill vermin or mice and rats to be specific.
Because of all these different terriers and the maltese in the gene pool, yorkies carried these recessive genes and occasionally colors other than the breed standard tan and black would show up in a litter. The old practice was to kill these puppies due to the color "fault".
In the 1980s a breeder in Germany by the name of Biewer had these unusually colored puppies born to traditional colored dogs and decided to continue to breed "for" the tri color. They deveoloped a new breed which is called the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier. It is not recognized by the AKC but their are several registries that do recognize them. The breed statndard for a german biewer is an undocked tail whereas the American Biewer Assiciation allows a docked tail I believe.
Anyway, when we see unusually colored yorkies, I love it! I love the fact that they are NOT the breed standard and that breeders now appreciate the beauty and worth of these creatures and no longer "cull" them. There is no evidence that these off colored yorkies have any more health issues than the typical tan and black although you commonly hear that argument for killing them or suggesting that people not buy them. A lot of people like unique and unusual. I love my Princess Chai and she is beautiful and healthy! I hope to own a Biewer someday as I think they are gorgeous as well! |
